This committee is responsible for working with Region V and local high schools to coordinate and run the annual high school mock trial competition. The competition is usually held mid Febraury of each year. However, work begins in the fall with a meeting with school sponsors and Region V to coordinate a date for the competition and discuss school participation. Most of the work occurs in January and February specifically obtaining the requisite amount of lawyer judges and running the competition over the course of one Saturday and Sunday in February.
Responsible for scheduling the speakers for the monthly CLE luncheons (beginning in July, skipping December & May). Speakers must be decided upon and information regarding each CLE (speaker name, title and outline) must be given to the Executive Director at least 30 days before the CLE in order for CLE credit to be obtained. CLE luncheons are the third Wednesday of each month at Cafe Del Rio. At each CLE, a committee member is required to be present to INTRODUCE THE SPEAKER on behalf of the JCYLA.
Responsible for obtaining sponsorships to finance our activities. This includes drafting and sending letters to our current and proposed supporters (generally the chair identifies the sponsors and potential sponsors, has the board members sign up for sponsors they agree to contact and then drafts a template sponsorship letter the board can use to send. Bonnie has copies of letters and sponsor lists). This committee must work with the Big Bar to make sure we do not duplicate our financial requests. The sponsorship letters are generally sent in November, with the deadline to receive money in January. The finance committee also designs and obtains the banners, signs, etc. that are needed for our various functions as well as getting copy from the sponsors for the newsletter.
Responsible for organizing the New Lawyer Orientation and Breakfast With The Bench (generally held prior to Law Day activities in May). Responsibilities for the NLO include obtaining CLE credit for the NLO (same process as above CLE credit), calling judges, collecting and updating the information CD for new lawyers & recognizing sponsors, scheduling itinerary to meet with district, county, and federal judges and arranging courthouse tour, and coordinating luncheon.
Responsibilities for the Breakfast With The Bench include choosing the venue and menu, inviting judges & following up, and generally setting up for the breakfast.
This committee also handles any new bar programs that may arise during the year. For example, last year's Pipeline Project.
Responsibilities include scheduling and organizing biannual (or quarterly) social activities, including but not limited to happy hours, sporting events, etc.
Helps determine and implement at least one annual community service project (other than our standard projects like Mock Trial) to be carried out by the JCYLA. The community service project can come from one of the TYLA "Off the Shelf" projects- but can also be flexible to meet the needs of the community as determined by the committee members and board.
